While reading today’s Daily Refresh on the YouVersion Bible App, I was struck by Proverbs 27:17 (NLT): “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” It reminded me of something from my childhood.
Growing up, when we couldn’t go to the market to sharpen our kitchen knives, my mom would take two knives and quickly rub their blades against each other. Soon, both knives would become sharp enough to use—sharper than before, when they were dull and useless. It made me think of how iron, too, needs to pass through fire before it can take its intended shape.

This verse and that memory reminded me that we are much like those knives. We need the right people around us to become sharpened, to be refined. You don’t get sharpened by just anything or anyone. A knife isn’t sharpened by plastic; it takes another iron or blade. Likewise, you are sharpened by like-minded people; those who share your values, faith, and purpose.
Mentors, friends, fellow believers—these are the ones who can shape and refine you. Those who do not share your foundation may not be able to sharpen you in the way you truly need.
And how do we sharpen others? Often, it’s with our words.
The Bible is rich with reminders on this:
Proverbs 12:18 reminds us that words can wound like sword thrusts, but wise words bring healing.
Ephesians 4:29 urges us to speak words that build up and give grace to those who hear.
Proverbs 18:21 tells us life and death are in the power of the tongue. The words we choose to speak can bring encouragement, love, and healing, or they can cause hurt, division, and destruction. The “fruits” we reap from our words reflect their power—whether for good or ill.
So today, instead of tearing someone down, why not be the iron that helps someone else shine?
I hope this reflection speaks to you.
